Interview with Rik Waddon
Sky Sports Living for Sport Ambassador Rik Waddon came into our school last Thursday. Rik has cerebral palsy. He took up cycling in 1991 at the age of 14 after being inspired by watching the Tour de France as a youngster. He knew little about disabilty sport at the time, and, as such, would compete in able-bodied races where he achieved some minor successes.
Rik spent all day with our pupils, initially giving them advice on road safety and then taking them out onto the playground on our schools range of adapted bicycles. Rik thoroughly enjoyed his day with the pupils and asked for each class to make him so cycling safety posters to put up around our new school in September. The posters are fantastic and there were too many good ones to pick any one winner. I have assured Rik that all posters will take pride of place in the new PE hall in a display cabinet all about the lovely day we had with him. Pupils were very excited to see his two paralympic medals that he brought along with him… however, this was nothing compared to the excitement caused by Rik showing us his very own lego man which was modelled after him after his success in the London 2012 Paralymics!
