Physical Education at Redbridge High School
The Curriculum
The P.E. curriculum is designed to meet the needs of our students and the activities concentrate on developing confidence, co-ordination, agility, individual skills and for the more able, team game concepts. For Base 1 students (profound and multiple learning difficulties) a sensory programme has been developed.
National curriculum activities are delivered throughout the P.E. programme which is modular in nature. Our pupils work on an activity for the duration of an academic half-term (approximately 6-8 weeks) and then the module will change.
For example a class might have basketball and be working on passing within their P.E lesson in the first half of the autumn term. The second half of that term may see the activity change to gymnastics where they will be producing different shapes with their bodies.
Students will have the opportunity to experience different types of games (basketball, volleyball, cricket, short tennis) gymnastics, health related fitness, swimming, outdoor pursuits, cycling, athletics and trampolining during lessons.
In Key Stages 2 and 3 each class has two P.E. lessons during the week and all FE students (post 16) have one.
The curriculum is delivered by a P.E. specialists Les Ward and Gavin Attwood). We also have sessions delivered by the local professional football clubs Liverpool and Everton.
Kit
We like each of our students to have their own P.E. kit that they can wear during the lessons. It would be ideal if all students had a red tee shirt, black shorts and a pair of pumps or training shoes, however, any appropriate sports wear would be acceptable. Although we keep a collection of kit for general use it cannot be guaranteed to fit individuals exactly and we always encourage students to have their own. Kit can remain in school (we have washing facilities) or can be returned home each week.
Out of School Hours Learning
We are committed to providing as much variety within the P.E. programme as possible and this is supplemented by a range of activities that take place during lunch-times and after school. If your child is selected to attend any activity that takes place after school our staff will deliver your child home on our transport at the conclusion of the club. We try to provide activities that stimulate our students and reflect the school's ethos whilst attempting to engage as many young people as possible.
Activities will vary from year to year depending on a variety of factors. Below is the current extra-curricular timetable for this academic year (Sept 2009 – July 2010).
